WMATA recognized for 'smart' card application

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has received two awards for its SmarTrip farecard.
Smart Card Alliance presented WMATA its 2001 Outstanding Smart Card Application Award, and Keep Montgomery County Moving (KMCM) awarded WMATA with its KMCM Award for Achievement in Advanced Transportation Technology.
Cubic Transportation Systems, a subsidiary of Cubic Corp., designed the two-year old system. Since launching SmarTrip, WMATA has issued more then 160,000 cards.
