VRE contracts Sumitomo/Nippon Sharyo to build bi-level cars

Virginia Railway Express (VRE) recently awarded a contract to Sumitomo Corp. of America and partner Nippon Sharyo Ltd. to supply 11 bi-level passenger cars, with an option for 50 additional cars. With options, the contract totals $109 million.
The gallery-type cars will feature seating for up to 144 passengers and replace older, single-level passenger cars. The cars are scheduled to be delivered between the end of 2006 and beginning of 2007.
