VIA Rail Canada Inc. last week released its 2025 annual report, which shows revenue rose 7.7% to CA$36.8 million, ridership stayed flat at about 4.4 million passengers and operating expenses increased 3.3% to CA$894 million compared with 2024 totals.
In the report, the passenger railroad highlighted that it improved self-sufficiency last year, covering 58% of its operating costs through self-generated revenue. Government funding for the year totaled CA$736 million, down about 24%
"Passenger rail is a public service. While this essential service is subsidized to ensure it remains accessible to all citizens, we are proud of the meaningful progress we are making to reduce our reliance on public funding, said VIA Rail Chair Jonathan Goldbloom in a press release.
Also in 2025, VIA Rail completed the receipt of 32 trainsets for its Quebec City-Windsor corridor and launched the request for proposals for the procurement of its fleet for new long distance, regional and remote services.
