Two East Coast transit agencies enter long-term supply agreements


Unless an agency has an unlimited budget from which to draw, aging infrastructure and increasing ridership can lead to a lot of maintenance headaches. To combat them, New York Metro Area Operating Authorities July 17 formed a partnership with RTR Technologies to help ensure the agencies’ equipment operates in a safe, reliable and cost-effective manner.

Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit entered into system replacement and long-term spare parts agreements with RTR and its manufacturing partner, Mors Smitt Relais (MSR).

RTR/MSR already has supplied NJ Transit with upgraded and updated trainline panels for the agency’s Transit Arrow III Fleet; and it supplied LIRR’s M1 and M3 fleets with HVAC panels — increasing mean time between failures and mean time between repairs for both railroads.

Installing the HVAC Control Panels and AC Motor Control Sub Panels on 400 of LIRR’s M1 cars significantly contributed to the railroad’s achieving 97.8 percent HVAC compliance last year, said Afshin Hezerkhani, LIRR deputy general manager of operations engineering, in a prepared statement.

And the modular approach RTR/MSR used in the trainline panels reduced trainline relay diagnosis and repair from as much as two days to less than 20 minutes, said Dak Murthy, NJ Transit manager of quality assurance.
