The recession, a high unemployment rate and lower gas prices (at least compared with a year ago) negatively impacted the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon’s passenger counts in May. The agency posted 8.5 million trips, down 4.3 percent vs. May 2008’s total.
Weekly ridership on the MAX light-rail system dipped 2.8 percent to 700,900. Weekday trips dropped 3.9 percent to 107,700, but weekend trips rose 1 percent to 162,400.
TriMet’s WES suburb-to-suburb commuter-rail service, which launched operations in February, posted 5,900 weekly trips in May.
