Yesterday, Sound Transit marked the first anniversary of the Central Link light-rail line.
During its initial year, the 16-mile line served an estimated 6 million riders, Sound Transit officials said in a prepared statement. Currently, the light-rail system averages about 23,400 riders each weekday.
The Central Link line is the first portion of a planned 55-mile light-rail system that will serve the central Puget Sound region. A 3.1-mile underground extension from downtown Seattle to Capitol Hill and the University of Washington is under construction and expected to open in 2016.
Extensions to Northgate, Lynnwood, Bellevue, Redmond, Mercer Island and northern Federal Way are scheduled to open by 2023.
