The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) board has approved a $482.5 million budget for fiscal-year 2027, a 2.4% increase over the FY2026 budget.
The budget will maintain service on core transit services, including all trolley and bus routes, and will continue investing in capital improvements, MTS officials said in a press release.
The budget continues the approach, adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic, of using one-time funds, operational savings and financial adjustments to address a structural deficit driven by rising costs and relatively flat revenue growth.
Proposed strategies to address those long-term funding issues include identifying and eliminating operational and administrative inefficiencies, evaluating fare policies and growing non-fare revenue sources. The agency will also pursue additional local, state and federal funding sources, and advance planning for a potential future regional transit revenue ballot measure.
“Public transit agencies nationwide are facing similar fiscal challenges, and MTS is proactively addressing them,” said MTS CEO Sharon Cooney. “This budget keeps our system running strong today while laying the groundwork for long-term stability and continued investment in our riders and communities.”
