The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is expanding and formalizing its Small Business Enterprise (SBE) program, which was launched as a pilot in October 2022 under SEPTA's larger Disadvantaged Business Enterprise program.
The SBE pilot was created to make procurement opportunities more accessible to smaller and newer businesses that would be overshadowed by larger firms in traditional contracting models, SEPTA officials said in a press release. Since its launch, the pilot has broadened bidding participation in state and federally funded contracts, they said.
SEPTA has increased the SBE contract threshold from $3,000 to $250,000. The expansion allows qualifying small businesses to compete for larger contracts, enabling business growth and strengthening local economies. Additionally, the program diversifies SEPTA's supplier network.
"With the formal establishment of the SBE Program and the expanded contract threshold, SEPTA continues to advance its mission of inclusive economic development while delivering reliable, high-quality service to the region," SEPTA officials said.
