The Regional Transportation District-Denver (RTD) on Nov. 25 completed construction on an 86-day project to fully reconstruct a segment of light-rail track that crosses southbound Kalamath Street, adjacent to the Colfax at Auraria Station in Downtown Denver

The Kalamath Street crossing project is part of the third phase of a five-phase rail reconstruction of RTD's Downtown Loop infrastructure.  The project was launched in 2024. The maintenance work supports the long-term integrity of the tracks, agency officials said in a press release.

Reconstruction work on the Kalamath crossing included 1,300 feet of track replacement. Crews removed existing concrete, rail, ties and ballast before placing new ballast stone and replacing the ties and clips. They completed 81 track welds and installed more than a mile of rubber flangeway filler.

Workers also installed 1,100 feet of restraining rail to prevent derailment, added a concrete foundation and panels to the Kalamath Street vehicle crossing, updated two pedestrian crossings with tactile warning strips and signage improvements, and conducted testing on all new track components.

The downtown light-rail track is RTD's oldest rail infrastructure, according to the downtown reconstruction program webpage. Light-rail service launched in 1994. Today, more than 300 light-rail trains circle the Downtown Loop daily.
