Purple Line light-rail project obtains $120M in federal funding
U.S. Sens. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.) have announced $120 million in federal funding through the Federal Transit Administration for the construction of the Purple Line light-rail route in Maryland.
This grant is part of the $900 million federal grant agreement for the Maryland Purple Line light-rail project, $568 million of which has been appropriated through the 2019 fiscal year, according to a press release issued by Hollen's office.
Funding will go toward the development of railways, stations, and storage and maintenance facilities.
The Purple Line is a 16-mile light-rail route that will extend from Bethesda in Montgomery County to New Carrollton in Prince George's County. It will provide a direct connection to the Metrorail Red, Green and Orange lines; at Bethesda, Silver Spring, College Park, and New Carrollton. The Purple Line will also connect to MARC, Amtrak and local bus services.
State officials broke ground on the project in August 2017.
