PANYNJ to hire new security officer, centralize security operations

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has launched a nationwide search for its first chief security officer as part of a plan to create a new security department.
The CSO will be responsible for developing, implementing, assisting and auditing security programs across the agency, including the PANYNJ Police Department, agency officials said in a prepared statement.
The new department will centralize security issues, increase security efforts at agency facilities, coordinate with other law enforcement organizations, and formalize lines of responsibility and operational and cost control over the organization, they said.
Creating one centralized department for security will remove internal procedures, security communication and responsiveness, and enable the agency to improve protection of the airport and maritime systems, Port Authority Trans-Hudson rail system, tunnels and bridges between New York and New Jersey, bus system and the World Trade Center — all of which fall under the authority’s responsibility.
PANYNJ plans to establish a temporary transition team, led by Executive Director Pat Foye and Deputy Executive Director Bill Baroni, to help assemble the new security division. The Chertoff Group, a global risk management and security advisory firm, will assist in the transition planning.
