NJ Transit renews focus on transit-oriented development

NJ Transit officials say the agency is committed to TOD, which combines housing, shopping and dining with easy access to rail.

New Jersey Transit earlier this week announced it identified additional opportunities for transit-oriented development (TOD) projects and is encouraging community partners to explore them.

To promote TOD opportunities on and near NJ Transit property, the agency in May launched a website to host project documents for interested bidders to access.

Agency officials said they encourage developers and builders to visit the site regularly as it will be the “prime location” for posting of upcoming TOD opportunities to bid on.

“NJ Transit is committed to transit oriented development, which combines quality housing and robust shopping and dining with the advantage of easy access to rail and bus service to other communities,” said NJ Transit President and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Corbett in a press release.

This year alone, the agency announced mixed-use developments adjacent to the Aberdeen-Matawan Station, along the Hudson-Bergen light rail, and adjacent to the Somerville Station in New Jersey.
