North Carolina's state-sponsored intercity passenger-rail service, NC By Train, set a new monthly ridership record in October.
NC By Train carried 74,400 passengers in the month, a nearly 10% increase over ridership in October 2024, North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) officials said in a press release. It was the highest month of ridership in the service's 35 years of operation.
Total ridership between January and October increased 4% over the same period last year, from 584,600 in 2024 to 608,300 this year. NC By Train ridership has consistently grown since 2022, and is on track to break its ridership record again in 2025, NCDOT officials said.
To increase ridership in recent years, NCDOT has made more daily trips available and offered trains for special events, including Carolina Panthers' NFL football games. NC By Train offers six routes with stops at 16 stations across North Carolina, NCDOT officials said.
