Metrolinx seeks firm to build new rail tunnel
Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario have issued a request for qualifications (RFQ) for companies to design, build and finance the Highway 401 rail tunnel project in the Toronto area.
The project will support the infrastructure needed to expand GO Transit rail service on the Kitchener Corridor.
The RFQ outlines the scope of work required, including construction of a second tunnel under Highway 401/409 to accommodate two additional tracks, future signaling and communications infrastructure. The work also includes replacing footings of retaining walls that support the ramp from eastbound Highway 409 and eastbound Highway 401.
The project is part of Metrolinx's GO Regional Express Rail (RER) program, which is aimed at providing faster and more frequent transit service across the greater Toronto and Hamilton area, agency officials said in a press release. The RER project includes electrification of core segments of the GO rail corridor by 2024 or 2025.
"The construction of a new 401 tunnel and an additional track is an important part of our plan to transform the way the region moves with two-way, all-day GO service," said Metrolinx President and Chief Executive Officer Bruce McCuaig.
Major infrastructure updates will be required for the RER project. These include adding track, modifying GO stations, improving rail crossings, building required systems for electrification, and adding new locomotives and train control systems.
The RFQ marks the first step in the procurement process to select a team to deliver the project.
Infrastructure Ontario is a Canadian Crown corporation that provides service to support the province's infrastructure initiatives, according to the agency's website. Metrolinx owns GO Transit, which provides public transportation in Southern Ontario.
