Metrolinx is increasing the police and security presence at Union Station and transit stops across the greater Toronto and Hamilton region in anticipation of a busy summer ridership season.
Trained Metrolinx special constables and additional on-duty Toronto police officers will begin patrolling Union Station this week, strengthening coordination between the city and transit agency and lowering response times, Metrolinx officials said in a press release.
Special constables undergo province-mandated police training, specialized transit and de-escalation training. The transit agency plans to hire more officers in the coming months. Additionally, security staff and front-line transit staff will begin wearing body cameras, Metrolinx officials said.
"Enhanced transit safety officer coverage and increased police presence are all part of the comprehensive planning we’ve been doing for months to ensure every rider, whether they’re heading to a [2026 FIFA World Cup] match, a concert or their daily commute, feels confident on our system," said Metrolinx President and CEO Michal Lindsay.
