Metrolink to pilot lower cost, simpler fare system

The new fare system will remove redundant and underused ticket types, making it easier for customers to purchase their desired ticket type.

Southern California passenger railroad Metrolink on July 1 will pilot what railroad officials say will be simpler and less expensive fare options.

Riders in an online survey in 2024 indicated that Metrolink was offering too many types of tickets, and they were unsure which one to purchase. The new system will streamline offerings, lower the costs of most monthly passes and introduce two fixed-price day pay options, Metrolink officials said in a press release.

Metrolink also is expanding daily discounts. It will add a 10% military veteran discount to match the active-duty military markdown and double the student and under-19 discount from 25% to 50%. The round-trip tickets, seven-day passes and 10-day-flex passes will be discontinued.

These changes are part of Metrolink's ongoing expansion from a commuter railroad to a regional passenger railroad, as the new options will serve a broader range of trips. The changes to the fare system will pilot through Dec. 31.
