Rail News: Passenger Rail

Metro-North expands ticketing options

advertisement

New York’s Metro-North Railroad in January launched a test program enabling passengers to purchase tickets online — including those for special promotional packages, such as trips to New York International Automobile Show, New York Botanical Gardens and Foxwoods Casino.

Would-be passengers would access Metro-North’s home page, then click on the WebTicket icon. Although there is no charge for the secure transaction, there is a $5 minimum per-ticket order. Tickets would be mailed, arriving within three to five business days.

Various ticket types may be purchased in a single transaction, including weekly, Ten-Trip Tickets, Family Fare, one-way and round-trip tickets. Previously, weekly tickets were sold no more than three days in advance; through WebTicket, weekly tickets may be purchased up to eight weeks ahead.

Monthly tickets, however, remain available only through the Mail&Ride program; MetroCards, which may be used on New York’s buses and subways, are sold on Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Web site.
