Rail News: Passenger Rail
Last year, MTA Metro-North Railroad set a ridership record at 74.5 million rides and established a high-water mark for on-time performance at 97.5 percent.
Ridership, which rose 3.8 percent compared with 2004, has increased 56 percent since 1984.
Metro-North officials attribute the ridership hike and on-time mark to improved service reliability. This summer, the agency will finish taking delivery of 300 M-7 electric cars from Bombardier Transportation; last summer, Metro-North added 65 new Comet V cars.
The agency also added passengers by providing service for special events and ramping up marketing efforts.
