MBTA posted ridership gains in October

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) weekday ridership, which averaged about 1.3 million trips per day, grew 3.2 percent during October compared with the same month a year earlier, Acting General Manager Jonathan Davis announced yesterday.
Although October’s ridership average was “just shy” of September’s record high of 1.35 million trips, September and October represented the MBTA’s highest ridership in the modern record-keeping era, Davis said in a prepared statement.
For the calendar year, ridership has increased in nine out of 10 months compared with 2010, he said. Davis attributed the increase to the state’s economic recovery and growing employment trend, as well as the appeal of the system’s real-time subway train and bus location information.
