Rail News: Passenger Rail
Caltrain’s Baby Bullet express trains have helped the California commuter-rail agency increase ridership almost 11 percent since the trains began operating last summer, according the Caltrain’s winter newsletter.
Last June, the agency revamped it schedule and began offering 10 Bullet trains, which take passengers from San Jose to San Francisco in less than an hour. Almost 20 percent of rush hour passengers have since switched to Bullet or limited-stop service, and 14 percent of Caltrain’s passengers are new riders, according to a fall rider survey.
Currently, three of the Bullet trains are operating at and two others are nearing capacity. Caltrain officials are examining the timetable to determine ways to shift less-used trains to other time slots.
