Glassboro-Camden light-rail project sponsors complete environmental study

A final environmental impact study (FEIS) has been completed for the proposed Glassboro-Camden Line (GCL), which would restore passenger-rail service along an existing rail line using light-rail vehicles similar to New Jersey Transit's River Line.

The 18-mile light-rail line would offer service between Glassboro and Camden in southern New Jersey. The proposed GCL is sponsored by the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA), Port Authority Transit Corp. (PATCO) and NJ Transit.

"The GCL is a vital transportation link for South Jersey, one that is long overdue," said Jeffrey Nash, a Camden County commissioner and vice chairman of DRPA, in a press release. "The GCL will serve to reduce our carbon footprint, increase property values for homeowners, spark economic opportunities for businesses and provide a convenient means of transportation."

The South Jersey Transportation Authority has committed $200 million toward the project's next phase: preliminary engineering design and project management.

"The GCL will effectively extend the Philadelphia-Camden metropolitan area," said John Hanson, DRPA chief executive officer and PATCO president.
