Foundation to sponsor greater Cleveland transit rides for a day

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) will provide free rides all day on Jan. 16 thanks to a financial gift from the Cleveland Foundation.

As part of its 100th anniversary celebration this year, the foundation is sponsoring Cleveland Foundation Day every month, starting Jan. 16 with free service for Cleveland area residents using GCRTA’s rail, bus, HealthLine and paratransit services, agency officials said in a press release.

“We know our customers will greatly appreciate the fact that their fare is a gift,” said GCRTA General Manager Joseph Calabrese. “We hope this will encourage greater Cleveland residents who don’t normally use [GCRTA] to do so for the day, and then maybe for a majority of their travel needs."

The Cleveland Foundation gave its first grant to GCRTA in 1981. The two organizations have worked together on a variety of projects, most recently collaborating on the new Little Italy-University Circle and Cedar-University stations that are under construction, agency officials said.
