Federal grant in hand for Metra station modernization

On Aug. 12, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) announced the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) a $1.3 million grant to help fund the redevelopment and modernization of Metra’s Oak Forest station.
Located on Route 50 (Cicero Ave.) and Route 6 (159th Street), the station is used by about 1,500 commuters daily, making it the second-busiest station on the Rock Island District Line, according to Metra. The 50-year-old station is considered outdated and Metra has identified it as a priority for updating, said Durbin in a prepared statement.
The federal funding “will increase the appeal of public transit as an affordable, reliable, environmentally friendly alternative to car travel,” he said.
IDOT also received a $1.7 million grant to help fund the replacement of two at-grade pedestrian crossings with one pedestrian underpass at Metra’s Lake Cook Metra station in Deerfield, Ill.
