FTA to give Northstar Corridor authority the green light to begin final design for new line

The Northstar Corridor Development Authority (NCDA) is inching closer to launching construction on the 40-mile Minneapolis-to-Big Lake, Minn., commuter-rail line. The Federal Transit Administration recently notified Congress of its intent to grant the authority approval to begin the project’s final design.

During the past several months, the project has taken a few steps forward. In May, NCDA, the state of Minnesota and right-of-way owner BNSF Railway Co. reached an agreement in principle outlining financial terms for Northstar construction and operation. And in June, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty signed legislation securing $60 million in state bonding for the project — the final funding NCDA needed to apply for federal matching funds.
