Rail News: Passenger Rail

Car-body manufacturer selected for Las Vegas Monorail

AAR Corp. June 20 announced that Bombardier Transportation selected its division, AAR Composites, to design, engineer and manufacture car bodies for Las Vegas’ planned monorail system.

"The materials for the monorail program feature a positive strength-to-weight ratio compared to more conventional materials, as well as providing superior corrosion resistance and dimensional fidelity," said AAR Composites President Ron Kelner in a prepared statement.

The monorail system would comprise seven stations, including two existing stations at MGM-Grand Bally resort hotel, and extend four miles on an elevated guideway. It is scheduled to enter service in February 2004, and transport 19 million passengers during its first operational year.
