The governments of Canada and Ontario announced yesterday the funding of a preliminary engineering study on a commuter-rail link between Peterborough and Toronto.
The study will cover preliminary design work and determine the upgrades needed to existing track and to operate a commuter-rail service between Peterborough and Union Station in Toronto, said Transport Canada officials in a prepared statement.
The federal and provincial governments each will fund half of the study’s cost. The federal contribution will be provided under Building Canada, a $33 billion effort to fund projects that “are contributing to a growing economy, a cleaner environment and more prosperous communities,” Transport Canada officials said.
The provincial government has invested $75 billion in infrastructure since 2003, Ontario officials said.
