Caltrain is planning several meetings — to be held Sept. 18, 20 and 27 — to receive comments from riders and the general public regarding proposed fare collection changes.



Changes already began when Caltrain installed ticket vending machines systemwide. Eventually, the passenger rail system plans to free conductors from selling tickets on board and progress toward instituting a Proof-of-Payment fare collection system similar to those used by San Francisco Municipal Railway and Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority.



The current proposal includes raising the fee charged for buying tickets on board from $1 to $3; requiring the use of validators for all 10-ride tickets; and changing some tickets’ validity periods. For example, one-way tickets would be good for travel three hours from the time of purchase; round-trip tickets, for the day of purchase. Ten-ride tickets would be valid for each one-way trip taken within three hours from the time of validation.



After it reviews comments, Caltrain’s board plans to hold a public hearing on the recommendations.
