BART to cut off-peak service as part of deficit-reduction plan

Beginning Sept. 14, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) plans to reduce service during off-peak hours to help whittle down a budget deficit.
On weekday evenings, weekends and holidays, the agency expects to run fewer trains, and at 20-minute instead of 15-minute headways, south of Daly City. The changes won’t affect the Red, Green or Orange lines, BART said.
The agency is trying to eliminate an estimated $310 million, four-year deficit amid declining ridership, state transit funding and sales tax revenue. The service reductions were adopted by BART’s board on June 11 as part of the overall budget process for fiscal-year 2010.
