Metra extends fare savings program through summer, breaks ground on new station

Reaching Chicago-area attractions soon will become more affordable when Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corp. (Metra) adjusts a fare program to coincide with students’ summer vacation.

On June 16, the agency plans to extend its Family Fares program to include weekdays, enabling up to three children under the age of 12 can ride free with a fare-paying adult. Usually available only on weekends and holidays, the program’s weekday savings will extend through Aug. 29.

Passengers also can purchase a $5 weekend pass for unlimited Saturday and Sunday rides, and 10-ride tickets, which save riders 15 percent on one-way tickets and can be used in conjunction with Family Fares.

Meanwhile, the agency recently broke ground on a $7.6 million station on the Union Pacific Northwest line at Pingree Road in Crystal Lake, Ill.

The 26-acre site will include a 400-space parking lot, and a 2,000-square-foot depot with a pedestrian tunnel under the tracks and two 820-foot platforms.

About 1,600 passengers board Metra trains in Crystal Lake daily. The station is expected to be completed next summer.
