Bay Area Rapid Transit opens airport extension

More than 100,000 passengers rode Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) San Francisco International Airport extension during the 8.7-mile section’s first week in service.

The $1.5 billion extension, which opened June 22, includes four new stations: South San Francisco, San Bruno, the airport and Millbrae.

Construction on the line began in May 1998. With the extension, BART’s system includes 104 miles of double track and 43 stations. In 1972, BART opened as a 71.5-mile, 33-station system.
