LA Metro staff recommend light-rail for East San Fernando Valley project

Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) staff have recommended building a 9.2-mile light-rail line for the East San Fernando Valley transit project.

The route would run from the Orange Line's Van Nuys station in Los Angeles to a Metrolink station in LA's Sylmar neighborhood. Trains would travel along the center of Van Nuys Boulevard and the San Fernando railroad right-of-way, which is adjacent to San Fernando Road.

On June 28, the authority's board will consider adopting light rail as the locally preferred alternative.

"Metro staff determined that light rail was faster, offered more capacity and would better serve the community in the future than bus rapid transit (BRT), the other type of transit under study for the project," Metro blog writer Steve Hymon posted last week.

Van Nuys Boulevard is the second-busiest bus corridor in the San Fernando Valley, and the seventh-busiest in Metro's system.

The agency's staff also recommended building a light-rail maintenance and storage facility between Raymer and Keswick Streets in the Van Nuys neighborhood.

Metro expects to break ground on the project in fiscal-year 2022 and open the new line by 2027. The project is part of the agency's Twenty-Eight by '28 Plan, which aims to complete 28 major projects in time for the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Los Angeles.
