RTD marks grand opening of West Rail Line

The Regional Transportation District of Denver (RTD) last weekend officially opened the West Rail Line, the first FasTrack light-rail corridor to be fully implemented into the existing light-rail system, officials said in a press release.

The 12.1-mile, 12-station light-rail line runs from Denver Union Station through Lakewood and the Federal Center, to the Jefferson County Government Center in Golden.

Ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held at three light-rail stations in three different jurisdictions, as the inaugural West Line light-rail train made its way from Denver Union Station.

Dignitaries attending the festivities included Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, Federal Transit Administration Region VIII Administrator Linda Gehrke and RTD General Manager Phillip Washington.

RTD officials estimated 35,000 total passenger trips on the West Line on Saturday alone. The agency is projecting about 20,000 trips on the line each weekday.
