Sound Transit solicits comments on Tacoma Link expansion, receives national award for procurement process

Today, Sound Transit is hosting two open houses as part of an early scoping process to solicit options for expanding the 1.6-mile Tacoma Link System that operates between the Tacoma Dome and Theater District stations.

During the scoping process, agency officials are soliciting public feedback on the purpose and need for the project, alternative corridors or modes to be considered for the expansion, and evaluation measures and criteria to compare alternatives.

Officials also are seeking comments on the transportation problems to be addressed by the expansion, as well as environmental, transportation and community impacts and benefits of each alternative.

Voters approved the Tacoma Link expansion in 2008 as part of the Sound Transit 2 ballot measures.

Meanwhile, Sound Transit recently received the Pareto Award of Excellence in Public Procurement from the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing.

The award recognizes the agency’s Procurements and Contracts Division for “distinguished best practices” in the areas of leadership, strategic planning, customer service, process management, technology and performance improvement.

In granting the award, institute officials commended the agency for “instituting policies and procedures that ensure fairness and transparency” in the procurement process, Sound Transit officials said in a prepared statement.

“By awarding our contracts through fair and competitive procurements, we make sure taxpayer funding stretches as far as possible,” said Sound Transit Chief Executive Officer Joni Earl.
