Effective June 25, the Port Authority of Allegheny County plans to eliminate 13 stops on light-rail lines as part of an effort to make service more direct for existing riders and more attractive to potential riders.

The stops were selected based on their low boarding counts, as well as proximity to other stops, authority officials said in a prepared statement.

The action follows Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald’s call last month for the authority to make several changes to improve the system’s efficiency.

“These changes should result in transit trips that are not interrupted by unnecessary stops, which benefits riders today as well as those who might consider using public transportation,” Fitzgerald said.

The change will affect less than 1 percent of total daily ridership and about 5 percent rail ridership, authority officials said.
