Valley Metro to use design-build approach for Central Mesa light-rail extension

Valley Metro in Phoenix plans to use a design-build construction method for a 3.1-mile extension to the Central Mesa light-rail system.
The method is a departure from the system’s typical project delivery approach, but “works in favor of building a quality product in this economy and in such a way that is supportive of the business community,” Valley metro officials said in a prepared statement.
The project team is finalizing preliminary engineering work. On July 24, Valley Metro issued a request for qualifications to initiate the design-build procurement.
“The challenging economy presents us with an opportunity to think creatively about how we move projects forward,” Valley Metro Chief Executive Officer Steve Banta said. “A quality design/builder can help us navigate toward a successful project that will best service the neighboring community and the public dollar. It will also benefit the project’s timeline.”
