VIA Rail to build station, mainlines in Ontario town

Yesterday, VIA Rail Canada Inc. announced plans to build a new station and improve infrastructure in Belleville, Ontario.

The railroad recently received federal funding for the projects. More than $2 million of the total $7 million cost will come from the Canadian government’s Economic Action Plan.

VIA Rail currently is studying options for station design; a final design will be selected later this year. The existing station, which opened in 1856, no longer can accommodate riders during peak travel periods, VIA Rail officials said in a prepared statement.

As part of a previously announced $300 million Kingston Subdivision project, the railroad plans to build two new mainlines and a second platform in Belleville.
