Caltrain tests wireless high-speed Internet onboard trains

advertisement

Caltrain recently tested a wireless broadband system designed to provide continuous high-speed Internet access onboard trains traveling at speeds up to 79 mph.

Caltrain conducted the test along 16 track miles between the Millbrae and Palo Alto stations. The agency will continue to analyze systems engineering before implementing wireless access along its entire mainline.

Four suppliers provided consulting services or equipment for the system. Intel® Solution Services helped implement the wireless system; Nomad Digital Ltd. provided a mobile communication system that links the train to trackside wireless base stations; Sensoria Corp. provided wireless mesh routers that provide connections throughout the train; and Redline Communications supplied radios that maintain connections between the train and trackside systems.
