GPS coming to Metrolink trains

Southern California Regional Rail Authority (SCRRA) Sept. 27 inked an agreement with GeoFocus Inc., a subsidiary of Williams Controls Inc., to install its TrainTrac® Global Positioning System (GPS) on its Metrolink trains.

SCRRA board members authorized the purchase in August. Installation is expected to take 13 months, beginning in October.

Although the initial purchase is for a base system, Metrolink requested that the system be upgradable to include additional features, such as an interface with the commuter rail system’s interactive voice-response telephone system, a paging notification system capable of sending train status directly to riders and operations personnel, connectivity to Metrolink’s local and wide-area network system and an Internet-based real-time train information display.
