Minnesota to begin constructing first station on Hiawatha line

Minnesota Department of Transportation plans Aug. 2 to break ground on the 38th Street Station — the first of 17 stops along the Hiawatha Light Rail Transit Line.

The 11.6-mile light-rail line would extend from downtown Minneapolis to the Mall of America. A formal groundbreaking for the alignment’s construction was held Jan. 17, following receipt of a full-funding grant agreement from Federal Transit Administration toward the $675 million project.

Officials expect to open the line for partial service from downtown Minneapolis to Fort Snelling in late 2003. Full service is expected to commence by the end of 2004.
