Toronto Transit to use Alcatel's SelTrac system

Toronto Transit Commission Dec. 18 awarded Alcatel Transport Automation Canada a $17 million contract to supply its SelTrac automatic train protection system for the commission’s Sheppard line.

The system uses transponder tags to communicate signal status to its vital on-board train control computer. It’s designed to provide train operator safety supervision, and ensure passenger and equipment safety by preventing trains from exceeding speed limits or passing signals at danger.

Officials expect the Sheppard line to enter service in three phases with the first one carrying passengers in 2003, and the final phase being completed in 2005.
