Norfolk Southern marks completion of Toledo intermodal terminal upgrades
Yesterday, Norfolk Southern Railway, federal and local officials conducted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of improvements to the Class I’s intermodal terminal in Toledo, Ohio.
The $12.4 million project included the addition of tracks, switches and signals to increase capacity. The project primarily was funded by a $6.5 million federal stimulus grant, $3 million state grant and $2.7 million provided by NS.
The Toledo Intermodal Terminal is a “shining example” of cooperation among various levels of government and the private sector, said U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) in a prepared statement.
Due to its geographic location and existing infrastructure, Toledo is well positioned to play a role in intermodal transportation, she said.
“Our strategy is to leverage those advantages into good-paying jobs in the transportation and distribution industries,” said Kaptur, adding that the facility could create up to 1,000 jobs over five years.
