Norfolk Southern Railway has expanded use of its in-house asset disposition mobile app, first publicly announced in January, and work is underway on parallel apps for disposition of rail and other track materials.
NS has expanded use of the app to more employees and upgraded its auction capabilities so that larger assets are routed directly to auction partners.
NS developed the "Thoroughbred Trading Post" app to streamline the asset disposition process for equipment, machinery, tools, facility items and other operational materials. Using it, employees can upload photos and descriptions of items to initiate requests to remove, auction off, recycle or reassign items instantly, NS officials said in a Feb. 26 "Story Yard" article on the company's website.
The app streamlines the process by standardizing how requests and data about equipment are stored, eliminating email chains and spreadsheets. Faster removal of unused equipment keeps rail yards safer and helps ensure equipment is properly sold, recycled or reassigned NS officials said.
