Norfolk Southern Corp. and Wabtec Corp. yesterday announced plans to modernize 33 of NS’ DC-traction Evolution Series locomotives as part of an ongoing fleet modernization strategy.
Wabtec will modernize the ES44DC locomotives with AC-traction motors, upgraded control systems and advanced digital technologies, converting the units into ES44ACMs.
AC traction provides superior adhesion and hauling performance, particularly in demanding operating conditions, NS and Wabtec officials said in a joint press release. The upgraded locomotives will deliver higher productivity with lower lifecycle maintenance requirements. The modernization package will also enhance locomotive diagnostics and maintenance planning, helping improve fleet reliability.
NS was the launch customer for the original ES44DC locomotives in 2004. Since 2015, Wabtec and NS have collaborated on more than 1,000 DC-to-AC locomotive conversions. This agreement continues that expanded partnership.
Work is being performed at Wabtec’s U.S.-based facilities. The first upgraded locomotive was shipped to NS this month; the remaining deliveries will continue through 2027.
