advertisement
On Oct. 17, Norfolk Southern Corp. plans to break ground on a $16 million intermodal terminal at the Philadelphia Navy yard.
The 50-acre facility would enable NS to become the third Class I to serve Philadelphia's port, joining CSX Transportation and Conrail Shared Assets.
NS expects the terminal to be complete in 2004 and annually handle 60,000 lifts.
Delaware River Port Authority, Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp. and Pennsylvania Department of Environment Protection set aside more than 160 acres at the former Navy yard for future intermodal and non-intermodal rail operations, including NS' terminal on the site of the former Mustin Field Naval Air Station.
