SA Recycling is expanding a rail spur at its flagship Georgia facility to increase capacity and eliminate mainline rail switching conflicts, according to Norfolk Southern Railway.
In its "Story Yard" blog, NS reported that it has a longtime partnership with SA Recycling and supports the Doraville facility project, which will expand capacity from 14 to up to 25 daily carloads.
"This 24/7 operation . . . isn’t just crushing used cars. It’s fueling a circular economy and creating new opportunities for sustainable growth — powered by rail," the blog states.
A 680-pound hammer shredder that can process 200 cars per hour is located on the site. Materials that can be recycled include autos, appliances, bikes, demolition debris and structural steel, NS officials said.
SA Recycling has 20 facilities across Georgia, including a key site in Savannah near NS’s Dillard Yard. Rail service will be key as the company continues to grow, the NS blog states
