The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has completed the latest infrastructure improvements along the Green Line C branch.
The work included the continued installation of the Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS) and accessibility enhancements at several street-level branch stops, which involved removing existing platforms and constructing wider, level and accessible platforms.
In addition, trackwork was completed at Ayr Road near Cleveland Circle and at a crossover near Coolidge Corner, and necessary tasks were accomplished to prepare for the arrival of a new fleet of longer Type 10 Green Line vehicles.
All work was performed on the C branch during the second of three major service outages to be conducted this spring in support of installing GLTPS at street-level stops on the Green Line. Work was completed on the B branch in April. GLTPS is designed to combine vehicle and wayside equipment to avoid train-on-train collisions and incorporate speed enforcement.
“We made a commitment to the public to implement an additional layer of safety with the new Green Line Train Protection System, work that had been delayed for far too long prior to this administration,” said Interim MBTA Secretary and General Manager Phillip Eng in a press release.
The MBTA plans to begin necessary work on the E branch later in May.
