Rail News: Maintenance Of Way

UP upgrades track in Arkansas, Oklahoma

Last week, Union Pacific Railroad completed a $2 million maintenance-of-way (MOW) project on its mainline and yard tracks between Hope and Clear Lake Junction, Ark.

Crews surfaced and lined 28 track miles, installed 15,400 ties and spread 6,800 tons of ballast.

Meanwhile, UP also is completing an $8.4 million MOW project on a mainline between Rush Springs and Waurika, Okla. To be completed by month's end, the project includes installing 87,500 ties, spreading 33,415 tons of ballast, surfacing and lining 43 track miles, and replacing surfaces at 58 grade crossings.

The projects — which began Jan. 3 — are part of UP's 2005 MOW capital plan, which calls for spending more than $1 billion to maintain and improve track within the road's 33,000-mile system.
