The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has awarded a seven-year, $133 million contract to RailWorks Corp. to upgrade the agency's rail network.

Under the contract, RailWorks will perform track improvements across MARTA's entire network, including the replacement of ties, running rail and direct fixation fasteners. The company also will carry out yard improvements, RailWorks officials said in a press release.

The company expects work on the project to start in spring 2019, with final completion in 2025.

MARTA's rail system consists of 122 miles of track, with 38 stations that connect Fulton, Clayton and Dekalb counties and the city of Atlanta.
