DTE Energy project to extend rail line, eliminate crossing in Trenton, Mich.

A project to extend a rail line in a DTE Energy Co. rail yard will eliminate a dangerous grade crossing in Trenton, Mich., the energy firm announced yesterday.

The project is designed to improve safety and traffic flow, DTE officials said in a press release. The rail yard holds trains delivering coal to the company's Trenton Channel Power Plant.

The track extension will allow for longer trains to be held for periods of time, which will eliminate about 12 train shipments over the course of the year. The change will result in fewer trains moving through the city, which reduces the number of times automobile drivers will have to wait at crossings.

The project will remove a dangerous crossing on Toledo Avenue over track at Hoover Street. The track is owned by Conrail and DTE and used by CSX trains. The crossing was recommended for removal by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) in 2003. Also, the project will eliminate the need for trains to park on track at the Lathrop Street crossing.

"We are happy to be able to undertake this project that should improve traffic safety and traffic flow in the city of Trenton," said Brian Kincaid, Trenton Channel Power Plant director. "We appreciate the assistance and cooperation of MDOT and city officials in helping plan this project."

Construction is slated to begin July 13.
