Iowa Transportation Commission provides funding for six rail projects

The Iowa Transportation Commission last week approved more than $4.6 million in funding for six rail infrastructure and development projects through the state's Railroad Revolving Loan and Grant (RRLG) Program.

The projects are expected to support the creation and retention of 73 jobs within the next three years; increase rail capacity at an agricultural co-op; spur development at two industrial areas; upgrade infrastructure at an existing rail yard; and support planning of a rail-served industrial area, commission officials said in a press release.

"The proposed developments will leverage millions in new capital investments across the state," they said.

The commission issued five loans through the program, including $1.7 million for a Des Moines rail port; $1.6 million for a rail connection at the proposed Iowa's Crossroads of Global Innovation ag industrial park; $500,000 for rail improvements for the Five Star Cooperative; $228,000 for Keokuk Junction Railway Co. track enhancements; and $196,300 for the West Charles Street viaduct.

The commission also will provide a $327,200 grant for the viaduct and a $100,000 grant for the Sioux Center rail port study.
